Aimee Hanson joined Leeds West Academy in June 2017 as Director of English within the Senior Leadership Team after a 17-year career at Colne Valley High School, where she was a highly successful Curriculum Leader for English. In May 2018, Aimee was appointed Assistant Principal at the Academy and now leads on key aspects of the Teaching and Learning strategy, in addition to being the English teacher for many Leeds West Academy students.
Aimee firmly believes in the transformative power of education and is passionate about ensuring that all young people are provided with their best opportunities for life success. For all young people, Aimee knows that developing the highest levels of literacy is the most important element of their academic toolkit and is responsible for leading the Academy’s drive to ensure there are no missed opportunities for pupils to develop these crucial skills.
Both as a leader and classroom teacher, Aimee ensures that every plan and action she takes is underpinned by the most up-to-date pedagogical and cognitive research.
As Assistant Principal for Teaching and Research, Aimee’s strategic responsibilities within the leadership team include the innovative ‘Total Recall’ homework policy, designed to explicitly develop students’ vocabulary for academic and life success. She also co-ordinates, and often leads, the successful parent Engage Events, early evening sessions designed to empower parents in being able to further support their children. This year, among other Engage Events, parents have attended interactive workshops on ‘Total Recall’, learnt how to develop their child’s resilience and received training now how to boost literacy and numeracy skills outside school.
When not at work or reading an edu-book, Aimee loves nothing more than spending time with her husband, grown-up son and three cats. She is also a keen dancer and long-time member of the Limelight Ladies theatre school dance group.
