New Building Development
The Principal, staff and students are delighted to be working with Mentor Architects on the plans for a completely new building for the academy which LWA will move into in September 2011. Investment in the new buildings amounts to almost £30 million pounds, which will result in an inspirational place to learn and work.
The new building design and planning consent was approved by a Leeds City Council Planning Committee in April 2010. As well as providing a 21st Century learning environment for students, the new Leeds West Academy will be a fantastic community resource, with a 4-court Sport Hall, fitness suite, activity studio, theatre with galleried and tiered seating, and extensive ICT facilities available for community use.
The new buildings feature innovative arrangements for subject teaching, placing aspects of the curriculum within three ‘hubs’: Diversity Hub will house Humanities, Languages, and PE; Communications Hub will house English, Performing Arts, and Creative Digital Media Arts; and Innovations Hub will house Science, Maths, ICT and Technology.
The innovative and inspiring new facilities will include; £1.8m devoted to new technologies to support teaching and learning including over 600 new computers (on a 2:1 student to computer ratio); video and editing suites; combinations of PC’s and Apple Macs using the latest Adobe facilities; and fully interactive classrooms to support group learning.
Work is rapidly progressing on the site which is located on the playing fields at the rear of the current building. We will post updates of the development here as and when they happen.
We want all students at LWA to have the skills to be successful in their future lives, and believe that by making the connections across the curriculum clear, we will help to produce the future engineers, technicians, designers, doctors, artists, performers, lawyers, journalists, teachers....whatever our students aspire to achieve.
