LWA staff vs students!
Students at Leeds West Academy managed to ‘get one over’ on their teachers during the Leeds 10K race on Sunday 19th June. Dean (10SBi) completed the run through Leeds city centre in a phenomenal time of 38 minutes, finishing in 31st place out of over 10,000 participants.
As a result of this Dean has been asked to attend the Leeds schools athletics trials in a fortnight. This is a phenomenal achievement for a fifteen year old, (who claims to have had very little specialist training!), and should he improve Dean could have a very bright future in athletics!
Fifteen students and 15 staff also ran as two teams during the run, with the students getting the best accumulative time overall. Braving the relentless rain, all participants displayed great enthusiasm and perseverance on the day, with everyone clocking in with a respectable finishing time. This was all the more impressive considering many of them had never competed in a race before!
LWA also operated a water station on the day, with staff, friends and the LWA cheerleading squad offering refreshment and encouragement for all the weary runners.
The teams representing LWA ran to raise funds for the Radio Aire ‘Cash for Kids’ appeal, a charity Leeds West Academy has supported in the past, to improve the quality of needy youngsters in Leeds. Donations can still be made at www.justgiving.com/leedswestacademystaff
The run was part of the academy’s ‘healthy schools’ agenda, encouraging students to live a healthy lifestyle. This will be boosted by the new £30m academy building, opening in Bramley in September 2011, which will feature state-of-the-art-sports facilities including a climbing wall, weights gym and sports hall with specialist lighting for a variety of sports.
