LWA students increase their cultural awareness

LWA students increase their cultural awareness

On Monday 28th March some Year 8 spent the day at Carlton Bolling College in Bradford.  The purpose of the visit was to increase student awareness of other cultures and religions.

The staff at Carlton Bolling had been kind enough to organise a full day of events – highlights included:

  • A visit to Madni Masjid, a local Mosque, where the group were shown the various prayer rooms, customs, prayer positions and the basic fundamentals of Islam.
  • A look at the Ramgarhia Gurdwara, a Sikh Temple.  The group, respecting Sikh customs, all wore head scarves and at one point took their shoes and socks off.  They were treated to a display of Sikh rituals and got to spend time in the Gurdwara, the prayer room, which was a lovely, relaxing place to be!  They also got to have a play on the harmonium and table and flex their musical skills!
  • A delicious lunch including samosas, bahji’s, pakoras as well as plates of cakes for those with a sweet tooth!
  • The final session involved our students meeting and interacting with some of the Carlton Bolling students.  The two groups asked each other questions and walked away with a new-found understanding of their neighbours’ respective lifestyles and cultures.  Some even learned how to write their name in Arabic!

All students involved were a credit to the academy – impeccably behaved and very respectful to the places they visited and the people they met.  The day was a great success and will be seen as the start of a relationship between the two schools, allowing LWA students to gain a greater understanding of other cultures and faiths.
