Ice Week October 2010
Based around the central theme of ‘Healthy Living,’ students across the academy had the opportunity to experience, sample, participate in and learn about new activities and lifestyle choices that will benefit a healthy lifestyle. Throughout the week all students were enthusiastic, polite to our numerous visitors and represented the academy impeccably on all visits. Below are some examples of the broad range of activities that took place!
In Foundation School a variety of activities took place to help the students to understand how to promote a safer community. Years 7 and 8 participated in a number of tasks to help them consider ways to obtain a healthy lifestyle and to be aware of some factors that can affect the development of a healthy lifestyle. The week was designed to encourage a positive and enjoyable atmosphere to learn and achieve plus various exercises to improve teamwork and communication skills. Activities included:
. ‘Wake up shake up’ exercise routines first thing in the day (with the best teams visiting local Primary Schools to lead our neighbouring students in excerise sessions)
. Creating healthy food recipes
. Create an assault course
. Safe sex and life expectancy lessons
. Making non-alcoholic cocktails
. Martial arts
. Visiting local Police and Fire Services, taking part in activities to ensure students are aware of local risks and they know how to keep themselves and each other safe
The Intermediate School looked at the theme of ‘Healthy Living = Healthy Actions = Healthy Consequences.’ To do this they studied eating disorders and the effects they cause, what influences people to become body conscious, media stereotypes, anorexia, the play Hard to Swallow and the work of artist Jenny Saville. The activities led to students creating a 1 minute monologue describing the feelings of someone suffering from the conditions they had studied over the week.
Also in the Intermediate School, the Communications Hub split into a variety of groups, each working on combining two different art forms, e.g. one visual arts / dance group designed the props which they would use in the dance they had created. The combination of the art forms resulted in some really exciting projects and all the hard work that went into the week counted as a piece of coursework for the pupils' Expressive Arts GCSE. Some of the end products will be available for viewing soon, and are well worth a look. Years 9 and 10 should be very proud!
Year 11 Geography students went on a fieldtrip as part of their coursework. Visiting Ilkley and Bradford, they carried out a number of tasks to test and compare the quality of life in the two areas. Despite the weather the students did a great job (special thanks to Mrs Guy and Mrs Hinchcliffe for driving the minibus!)
The High School looked at how to ‘Make a Change’ to their health, other peoples’ health and health on a global scale. The students completed a first aid qualification and engaged in a wide variety of topics and activities such as wheelchair basketball, self defence, bullying, sexual health, nutrition, drugs awareness and emotional health. Selected Science students were also given a lecture by LWA Governor Prof. Darren Shickle, Professor of Public Health at Leeds Metropolitan University. The week culminated in a health fair that contained over 17 different stalls covering many of the topics the students had been studying. Throughout the week all students showed outstanding maturity whilst covering some difficult subjects.
All Year 12 PE students completed a basketball refereeing certificate (which will prove invaluable for their course and UCAS forms), whilst all Year 13 PE students completed the FA level 1 football coaching qualification. Click here for all images of the day
