Poet Laureate officially opens LWA Communications Hub
The occasion was also notable for the first 'proper' use of our new theatre - a chance for our Performing Arts specialism to shine! The first half of the event saw our students put on some fantastic displays of poetry, dance and acting, to which the finale was greeted with a standing ovation from the capacity audience which included our local MP, Rachel Reeves, senior figures from our sponsors E-ACT plus many other notable figures from the local community.
The art installation was unveiled to much praise, following a short speech from artist Stephen Raw. Once completed it will be a unique, bespoke addition to our fabulous new building, and has gained national press coverage in the last 7 days! Mr Raw will soon start work on a commission for the Olympic Park, again using Carol Ann Duffy's work.
The night was rounded-off by a reading by the Poet Laureate of her verse, including passages from her new collection The Bees, followed by a presentation to some of our students who recently won a poetry competition.
LWA would like to thank all those who joined us for this special occasion and we encourage all our visitors to visit the library and see the art installation for themselves!
