Welcome to Leeds West Academy

Thank you for taking an interest in Leeds West Academy. We are a new place for learning serving the communities in the west of the city with high ambitions for our learners. The academy has a distinctive offer for students and the community, based on the core principles of striving for excellence, valuing success in every endeavour, and creating an environment where learning can flourish.

At Leeds West Academy we place the learner at the heart of everything we do. Traditional values underpin our aspirations for students as we are a learning community which values respect, tolerance and hard work. On these foundations we are dynamic and forward-thinking, with features which have been described as innovative and inspirational. In September 2011 we will be opening in our brand new £30m building, which is being creatively designed to be an asset to the whole community.

I hope you will take the time to look at our website which gives a flavour of what we have on offer, but more importantly come and visit us and find out for yourself what a vibrant community of learners LWA is.

Mission Statement: Leeds West Academy is a learning community where every learner succeeds, is valued, and makes a positive contribution.

The Academy has many distinctive features which are designed to ensure that we achieve our aims. Every learner is attached to a very small ‘Home Team’, where between eight and ten students are supervised by one ‘Coach’. The coach spends and hour and a half each week with those students, providing academic guidance, support, and advice. As part of our commitment to ensuring that every student is known, the academy has three smaller schools within the overall structure: the Foundation School, which is Years 7 and 8, the Intermediate School, Years 9 and 10, and the High School, Years 11, 12 and 13. In this way students have a feeling of belonging to a smaller group, with very clear support for well-being and progress.

Students at Leeds West Academy have a curriculum tailored to their individual needs and ambitions which is complemented by an array of extra-curricular opportunities available through the Extension and Enrichment Programme. Every Monday and Wednesday evening straight after timetabled lessons, students opt into activities which they choose themselves, such as additional sporting classes, special interest clubs, outdoor and community activities, or additional studies.

Making sure that individual students are properly supported, have a wide array of opportunities, and feel anything is possible for their future, is the bedrock of our commitment to educational success. We have an absolute commitment to be the flagship learning community in the city of Leeds. We hope that you will join us in our mission to be just that.
