Creative Digital Visual Arts
The Creative, Digital and Visual Art department is a member of the Communications hub within the academy, which also includes English and the Performing Arts departments. CDVA at LWA has developed considerably over the last 4 years. In September 2012 the Department moved into 6 brand new purpose built teaching rooms with access to 3D, ceramics, textiles and print making facilities being staffed by 8 committed teachers of Art and Design.
The subject is taught at National Curriculum Key Stage 3 to all pupils for 2 lessons per week. Students opt at the end of Y8 with 18 groups currently studying a KS4 course over the Years 9, 10 and 11. Courses followed include NCFE Media, BTEC First Diploma, GCSE Photography and GCSE Art and Design. There are AS/A2 level groups in Art, Craft & Design, Photography and Graphics. BTEC Level 3 groups also feature in Art and Design,
The department is very well equipped in ICT with 3 suites of Apple Mac computers supporting the full Adobe suite including Photoshop, Illustrater and In Design. The green screen room and cinema enable students to explore and work with state of the art technology and a purpose built darkroom and kiln complement the digital facilities to provide a holistic and varied design curriculum.
The school is committed to raising achievement through the Arts and as such the Visual Arts play an important role in developing approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum. Students benefit from access to a range of professional work through visits to galleries and professional artists working in the Academy. Currently, students are working on a project with Matthew Raw to design and create an Arts Wall on the back wall of the theatre to bring the Communications hub together in one creative and inspirational piece of work.
Students, as artists achieving and enjoying, are at the heart of the Creative, Digital, Visual Arts Area at Leeds West Academy. Embracing the 'Leeds West Way' and a positive ethos, CDVA offers an exciting range of skills and mediums including Photography, Film, Digital Imaging, Graphic Communication, Creative Media, Textiles and Craft. A wonderful blend of enthusiastic students and energetic teachers passionate about their subject specialism underpins learning in the creative area where every child matters.
