James Rand began his teaching career at Leeds West Academy eight years ago as part of the inaugural cohort of Teach First in the Yorkshire and Humber region. He previously worked in the publishing industry and taught English in Malaysia and India before and after studying a degree in History at the University of Sheffield.
James was appointed as Leeds West Academy’s Assistant Principal for Student Learning Development in September 2016, following four dynamic years as Area Team Leader for Humanities.
Under James’ leadership the Humanities department enjoyed notable successes, including outstanding results in both History and Geography in 2015 and sustaining outstanding results in A-Level History between 2012 and 2015. In the 2015-16 academic year, James also worked closely with the History departments at Leeds City Academy and Leeds East Academy, helping them to embed a new curriculum at Key Stage 4.
James is passionate about raising standards in education and is especially inspired by the social mobility agenda. Recognising the importance of a good education, he wants to devote his career to creating successful schools in challenging contexts so that all students can achieve their full potential.
In his spare time James is a keen runner and enjoys training in the great outdoors, particularly across the impressive landscapes which Yorkshire has to offer.
