Danny Bullock joined Leeds West Academy in 2013 through the Teach First programme as an ICT Teacher. During his training with Teach First, Danny was selected to give the closing speech to 1,500 fellow trainees for the whole UK at the national closing ceremony. Danny joined the Teach First programme because of his relentless passion to improve the life chances of young people. This passion and mission for working with young people began when he worked in the USA.
For six consecutive summers, Danny worked at a Resident Camp as director for underprivileged children from New York with the aim of building aspirations, resilience and core life skills. During this time Danny set up and ran many programmes working with US schools in both inner city and rural areas. His programmes with schools looked at building skills with young people such as team work, resilience and perseverance.
In the UK Danny continued his link with the US and became a regional interviewer for applicants wanting to work with young people abroad. Since returning from his role, Danny aimed to set up and give similar opportunities for children in the UK. Danny went on to run a Summer programme for young people in Sheffield in 2014 and then moved on to create a brand new programme for young people in the Leeds West area within the Bramley Cluster, which has now run successfully for the past two years serving around 300 children.
During his time at Leeds West Academy, Danny was appointed as Deputy of Foundation School in 2014, working on improving the behaviour and progress of Year 7 and Year 8 students. After success in these areas in 2015, Danny successfully secured for the full role of Foundation School Leader.
At present Danny is in his final year of the Teaching Leaders Fellows programme and has been invited back to speak to prospective candidates about his experiences. Similarly, Danny has since worked with Teach First running teacher training events for new teachers in the North.
Danny has implemented a number of new Foundation and Whole School initiatives to improve areas of the Academy and continually looks to innovate and positively influence the school. Since January 2017, Danny has assumed the role of Acting Assistant Principal for Closing The Gap.
