Ben Wheeler studied at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in Secondary Physical Education. His first role as a PE teacher was at Balby Carr School in Doncaster, where he was also appointed as Assistant Head of Year. Within four years Ben was appointed as Head of School at Campsmount School, Doncaster, before promotion to the role of Assistant Headteacher as Lead Designate for Child Protection & Safeguarding as well as Alternative Curriculum Coordinator.
Following thirteen years at Campsmount, which included transition of the school through significant fire damage to a new academy building, Ben was appointed as Vice Principal for Behaviour and Safety at Leeds West Academy.
Since 2013 Ben has led the implementation of a new Behaviour Policy, led the development of an improved Early Intervention System, introduced the Intensive Support Team and been involved in the development of alternative provision locally, through his role in the Secondary Sub Group. He has also worked with the Cluster and the AIP to recruit new staff in leading roles whilst collaborating with groups to develop relationships between agencies, ensuring effective working partnerships.
In January 2017 Ben became Acting Principal of Leeds West Academy, following Principal Nick Hinchliffe's deployment into The White Rose Academies Trust as Head of Education.
Ben completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) in 2004 and has completed a number of professional development courses including First Aid, Child Protection and Restorative Practice.
Ben is a keen sportsman with a passion for rugby and football, and was a semi-professional rugby union player up to 2006. He’s a Kop season ticket holder at Liverpool FC and enjoys golf, kickboxing and cycling. His other passion is spending time with his family; especially watching his children develop their sporting exploits.
