The Paper Birds
This week, Year 11 students from Leeds West Academy took part in a two-hour workshop as part of their GCSE Drama examination. The workshop was led by Kylie Walsh from The Paper Birds Theatre Company, launching the start of their practical exam.
The Paper Birds Theatre Company were formed in 2003 and were featured in the National Student Drama festival with their first show, A Smile Fell in the Grass. Thirteen years later the company is made up of three of its founding members, creating devised, visual, physical theatre that often extends and vocalizes the stories of women.
Throughout the workshop students explored the musical Oh! What a Lovely War through physical theatre activities and examined the satirical tone of the play, creating their own propaganda adverts.
Ms Cant, head of Performing Arts, said: "We thank Kylie Walsh from The Paper Birds for her excellent workshop, which both inspired and enlightened our drama students ahead of their practical examinations. Oh! What a Lovely War is a particularly special show for Leeds West Academy, as it brought home awards for dance and design in 2014, so it was wonderful to explore this production more deeply for Year 11 students."
Performing Arts is an award-winning specialism at Leeds West Academy. For more details visit the curriculum section here.
