The Lion King at Wharfedale Festival
Leeds West Academy’s production of The Lion King Jnr brought home several awards this weekend at the Wharfedale Festival of Theatre, including Best Musical.
The awards ceremony exists to promote, celebrate and encourage theatre in Yorkshire. It is open to amateur dramatic and operatic societies in addition to youth groups and schools.
Several representative performers from Leeds West Academy, ranging from Year 7 to Sixth Form, were in attendance with parents and teachers.
Following high praise from the festival organisers, The Lion King Jnr was awarded the prestigious Cyril Spencer award for Best Musical. Each student also won awards for Outstanding Performance & Merit in their categories.
Erin was awarded Best Actress, whilst Candice won a trophy for artistry in dance. Ms Hudders and Ms Newsome were also awarded commendations for choreography. Mr. Ellis-Hambley was also praised for Best Programme Design.
Ms. Cant, show director and Head of Performing Arts, added: “We’re very grateful to The Wharfedale Festival for recognising the achievements of The Lion King Jnr, which was an instant hit with cast, crew and audiences. We look forward to next year’s festival and congratulate all the other winners and participants.”
