Student of the Week

Thousands raised for Cancer Research UK

Congratulations to Penny who has won this term’s Student of the Week. In a single year Penny has raised over £5,300 for Cancer Research UK.

Penny was inspired to hold a fun day at home in our garden after losing her great grandma to Leukemia in June 2015. She wanted to do something positive for a very worthy cause in her memory. Penny contacted local businesses in person or via email to ask for donations to the raffle and auction prizes and rallied round friends and family for their help on the day running stalls.

Over two years businesses such as Morrisons, Bradford City, Yorkshire Cricket, Next, Mecca Bingo, Clarks, Betty's, The Deep in Hull, Pets at Home, Specsavers and many more have been donating to the cause.

On the day Penny arranged a BBQ, bike exhibition, cake stalls, tombolla, facepaints, penalty shoot-out, memory tree, Beat the Stig game and more. Penny also ran an auction at the end of the fun day and secured prizes such as a day out in a chauffeur driven Bentley, including paintings and theatre tickets.

Penny’s mum said: “The kind support that Penny gets is amazing which shows in the amounts she has raised from both fun days. We are very proud of Penny's achievements, she likes to keep us all busy in helping her plan the day and she is already planning her next fun day....!!”

Penny’s achievements have been reported recently in The Telegraph & Argus. You can follow the ever-growing fundraising at Penny's Just Giving account here.
