Student in Playhouse Christmas spectacular

Leeds West Academy student Troy Tipple has been cast as Luke in West Yorkshire Playhouse’s UK premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom The Musical.

Strictly Ballroom The Musical is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. The show features break-into-song musical numbers such as Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time, as well as new numbers by internationally acclaimed artists including Sia, David Foster and Eddie Perfect.

Troy Tipple has an impressive performing arts résumé, having performed as Charlie Bucket in the hit West End musical Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. At Leeds West Academy he dazzled audiences in the leading role of Simba in The Lion King, which later won the prestigious Cyril Spencer Award for Best Musical at the Wharfedale Festival of Theatre.

Now Troy is one of three actors to play the part of Luke in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. Troy revealed: “You can expect dancing, singing and acting in this musical. It’s a massive show and it’s going to be huge. I’m really excited. It’s also a long run; I expect to be performing every third show between November and January.”

James Brining, Artistic Director of West Yorkshire Playhouse, said recently: “We pride ourselves on producing exceptional musical theatre and we are building a reputation for showcasing world-class musicals here in Leeds. It already promises to be very special indeed.”

Principal of Leeds West Academy, Nick Hinchliffe, added: “Congratulations to Troy on his star casting in this spectacular show. After his rip-roaring performance as Simba in our own production of The Lion King, we can’t wait to see him bring his talents to the stage at West Yorkshire Playhouse this Christmas.”

Strictly Ballroom The Musical is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from Wednesday 30th November to Saturday 21st January. Tickets cost £13.50 – £45.00. Book online at www.wyp.org.uk or call the Box Office on 0113 213 7700.
