Into a restful Summer ahead of a new year with endless opportunities
As the 2016-17 Academic year draws to a close, I would like to thank our students and parents for the incredible welcome you have offered during my first seven weeks as Principal. Having worked in the west of Leeds in the past, it is great to return to such a warm, welcoming and supportive community.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind our parents about our Strategy for Rapid Improvement, the document that details the steps we are taking to transform Leeds West Academy. It is important that our parents are aware of this as we move into the new academic year; this will help you to understand the decisions we are taking and the reasons for these decisions. You will already be aware of the significant change to our Pastoral Support system, effective from 6th September. We believe strongly that this will bring about strong working relationships between our staff, students and parents. In recent communications, you will also be aware of the changes to our behaviour policy, with a bold move towards our new Positive Behaviour policy. This policy is firmly rooted in reward and the recognition of success in order to ensure high standards of behaviour and personal conduct are maintained, consistently and fairly.
Student Attendance will be a key focus for the new academic year. One of the biggest barriers to achievement at Leeds West Academy has been the relatively poor level of attendance amongst a significant number of our students. We simply must work together to ensure this improves next year. It is my job to ensure our staff provide an excellent standard of education for your children when they arrive at the Academy; I therefore ask that you do all you can to ensure your child's attendance remains above 97% for the next academic year. This alone, will guarantee your child makes stronger progress, but when coupled with incredible teaching, the possibilities are endless.
This week, we have said farewell to many colleagues who have worked hard and shown incredible commitment to our students' success. I would like to thank those colleagues on behalf of our students and wish them well in their future careers and endeavours. I am pleased to inform you that we are fully staffed for September, with many incredible colleagues set to join us for the new term.
As we close for the summer break, I would like to remind students and parents that we will re-open to students on Wednesday 6th September. I look forward to welcoming our students back safe and well from their holiday on this day, which will be a phased start, with each year group having their own designated start time. The details are available here.
In closing, I feel privileged to lead Leeds West Academy into the 2017-18 academic year. I am excited by the improvements that the new term will bring, all with the aspiration of improving the enjoyment and outcomes for each and every one of our students.
I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer.
