Leeds West Academy

November Sports Roundup

It has been an eventful and successful month for sport at Leeds West Academy, despite some dark and frosty weather as Winter truly sets in.

In Rugby, a foggy night saw Year 9 play against John Smeaton with a draw, losing out to Morley in the Semi-Finals. However on 18th November, Year 7 boys battled the wind and rain to be crowned the Leeds and Hunslet plate champions, our first rugby trophy of the season. The boys convincingly beat Temple Moor and Lawnswood to reach the final against Abbey Grange. The final was a tough game with Abbey Grange scoring first; the team were on the back foot but with some strong running and excellent defence the game was turned around and with a win of 4 tries to 2.

Mr Anderson and Mr Long took Sixth Form BTEC Sports to Elland Road to watch some professional football on 3rd November, providing inspiration for some detailed analysis of coaching and strategy. Later that week the Under-19s Football fought a brave effort for the team with a 7-0 win for Horsforth. Mr Long commented: “The students showed great endeavour and resilience throughout a tough game.”

In other Football news Mr Noutch took the Year 7 team to a tournament at Pudsey Crawshaw: "The boys finished second after beating Priesthorpe 3-1 and then going on to lose to the hosts 5-0. If you see any of the students congratulate them on their excellent behaviour in representing the Academy."

On 9th November Ms Bishop-West managed Year 9 and 10 Netballers to play against Farnley. Year 9 started the evening with a brilliant win, with a final score ending 9-8. Unfortunately Farnley's Year 10 team had the high ground over our team and the game ended 32-5. Ms Bishsop-West added: "The Year 10 girls battled through until the end, doing us proud as always. Well done to both Years for some extraordinary play."

Sixth Form BTEC PE visited the Richard Dunne Centre on 17th November, where they trained to run the upcoming district (Kirklees, Leeds, Bradford and Calderdale) Youth Disabled Games. This opportunity was set up by Mr Anderson and will be commencing on from 3rd December. Sixth Form then trained Year 8 students from Huddersfield in how to successfully run the events. Mr Long, Area Team Leader for Sport and the Community at Leeds West Academy, praised the Sixth Form's work: "The students were amazing, showing extremely high maturity levels. Another superb example of professional development. Well done all."

Also on 17th November Leeds City Academy hosted the inaugural White Rose Varsity Games Competition, which included sister schools Leeds West and Leeds East Academy. On this occasion the games were for Year 9 and 10 boys’ Football and Year 9 and 10 girls’ Netball. The Football was a great spectacle with silky skills from all players involved. Leeds West Academy drew the first game 5-5 with Leeds City (who substituted a Year 11 team) and defeated Leeds East Academy 9-2 in the second game. However, we missed out on a one-goal difference to win the trophy for that competition. The girls fared better in their netball competition beating Leeds East 8-0. The standings for the shield after the first competition are: Leeds West Academy 5 points, Leeds City Academy 3 points and Leeds East Academy 3 points. The next competition is Fitness in the last week before Christmas, hosted at Leeds West Academy for the lower years.

Mr Long summarised: “It’s been a busy and bold month of sport for the Academy and we’ve seen all of our teams grow in strength and resilience. Congratulations to all who have proudly worn the Leeds West Academy colours and well done for bringing home some amazing trophies so soon in the season.”
