LWA Triumphs at Amp Awards
Leeds West Academy joined several other competing schools this week for The Amp Awards at the 02 Academy arena in Leeds City Centre. Representing the school were Harry, Erin and Malachi in a fifteen minute set of new music written by the Year 10 band, named Unplugged.
The AMP Awards is a national music competition for bands, offering a fantastic business enterprise opportunity for students, which connects pupils, teachers, business mentors and creative professionals across Yorkshire. The competition presents an authentic, exciting business challenge and a platform for live, original performance, enabling young people to discover and evidence skills, increase confidence and grow strong, collaborative, cross community networks.
Leeds West Academy's Year 10 NCFE Music class planned and hosted a 1920s-themed preshow hospitality event for a selection of fifty VIPs. Students worked tirelessly to develop a theme and source activities and refreshments for the event, whilst securing a large amount of the resources from local businesses. The AMP Awards commented that the preshow was: "The best VIP hospitality event they had seen."
Following a live text-based vote with a panel of industry professional judges, Unplugged were announced as third-place winners of the competition. Music Teacher Ms Kurij said: "Unplugged are a band that have developed through their classroom music lessons and their song writing skills were highly commended by the judges at the event. To come third in such a large event is an amazing achievement for these very deserving students. I am extremely proud of the work that all the students put in to make the evening such a success."
Coming second in the competition was Leeds City Academy's 4 Simones. Executive Principal & CEO of White Rose Academies Trust, Annette Hall, added: "I am delighted that two Academies within the trust have brought home winning commendations from the Amp Awards. The standard of musical performance was superb and demonstrates the skill and high standard of performing arts in both schools. Congratulations to Unplugged and 4 Simones, with thanks to the dedicated staff who have supported them through to this great achievement."
