White Rose Academies Trust has been given the opportunity to partake in a real-life brief that has been created in partnership with Leeds Northern Ballet and Leeds Opera North. This is an exciting experience where both Leeds West and Leeds East Academy will work alongside each other to create sets, costumes and advertising materials for the opera L'Elisir D'Amore.
Costume Design students have enjoyed a behind-the-scenes experience at West Yorkshire Playhouse and learnt how sets are designed, whilst creating their own costumes using garments from the costume department. Students have also had the experience to work alongside actors in the production to improve their understanding of the opera, with the opportunity to collaborate with creative artists to create responses to their chosen briefs.
Year 9 Construction students were challenged with producing a 1:25 scale model box of the Grand Theatre Leeds, with model scenery and props in conjunction with their forthcoming production of The Elixir of Love. The students have researched the storyline and are now busy constructing models in the hope that their work will be displayed at Opera North as part of their initiative to introduce theatre to young people.
Leeds West Academy and Leeds East Academy thank Leeds Northern Ballet, Leeds Opera North, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Grand Theatre Leeds for their supportive collaboration in this exciting and inspiring project.
