Acting Principal's Update
I hope that you have all enjoyed a pleasant weekend. I am pleased to report that we had a successful first full week back at Leeds West Academy, despite the challenging weather conditions. As I stressed in my previous update, attendance is key in ensuring that students have the best chance to succeed, whatever the elements have to challenge us.
This week, I have been presenting our core values and expectations to students during assembly. Our core values and expectations are the result of a consultation process involving Student Council, staff, parents and the Local Accountability Board. Also in assembly we have focused on National Obesity Awareness week, which exists to raise awareness of healthy living and balanced diets. The school has actively engaged with the PE department on various challenges, resulting in students being rewarded for their outstanding efforts. We hope that all of our students will endeavour to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle following these inspiring assemblies. Information about this important incentive is available on the front page of school website here.
This coming week, a representative of the Department for Education will be visiting Leeds West Academy to observe and assess the progress that we are making as an academy. On behalf of everyone at Leeds West, I am delighted to welcome Mr Mike Ion to our school and I am sure that he will observe our determination to be recognised as an outstanding academy within three years.
Further planning for ICE Week will also be taking place this week. Our highly-popular ICE Week takes place in the last week of this half term and we are certain that our students will be enthused and motivated by the excellent activities that are going to be offered.
Finally, two items of pleasing news. Firstly, a group of 50 students and staff went to see Peter Pan at the Alhambra Theatre last week as part of our rewards system. Not only did the group thoroughly enjoy the pantomime, but members of the public also commented on how impressed they were with our students’ conduct and manners.
Secondly, I am pleased to announce that eight Leeds West Academy staff were honoured at an Awards Night and End of Term Celebration at the O2 Academy in Leeds, presented by the Leeds City College Group. We are delighted that our staff were award winners and look forward to even more winners next year. Well done to all!
