Academy Principal's Update
As half term approaches, Mr Hinchliffe wishes to update you on a number of things happening over the holiday period:
EEP cancelled on Monday 31st October
On the first Monday back after the half term holiday, EEP will be cancelled to allow some important staff training to take place.
Road Safety Message
Since the start of this academic year there have been a number of incidents involving Leeds West Academy students crossing roads near to the Academy and around the local area. A small minority of our students are taking risks when crossing the road, such as running across without using traffic light crossings and walking on the road, which has resulted in some near misses causing distress for drivers. This is obviously a huge safety concern for the well-being of our children coming to and from the Academy, as well as other road users. If your child walks to and from school, can you please talk to them about doing so safely and using the crossings correctly on their route.
Cycling to School
As part of our drive to be a Healthy School, we encourage students to walk and cycle to the Academy. However, it is very important that students cycling to school do so safely, whilst observing the rules of the road. After half term, if students wish to cycle to school, they will need to show evidence that they have passed a cycling proficiency course, and they must also wear a cycle helmet. With this in mind, we have arranged for students to be able to take the Bikeability Cycle Training course soon after half term. We will be able to support students who pass the course with the purchase of a helmet. Students interested should collect a form from Student Reception and return it to Mr Long in the PE Department.
Our new Ruler App to support homework
After half term, we will be introducing a new App called Ruler. This App will allow you to see what homework your child has been set and also let you access the necessary resources for homework. There will be detailed information on the website about how to use the App, and shortly after half term, I will be sending you a username and password so that you can access the site.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in light of the medical emergency we experienced this week. We are pleased to confirm that the student is making superb progress and on the way to making a full recovery. Our school community is working together to provide ongoing support for students, and we are grateful for the concern and messages that we’ve received from our caring and neighbourly community. We do, however, ask that the personal privacy of those involved is respected at this time.
I wish you a restful half term.
Mr N Hinchliffe
